The Gift of Gratitude: A Short Inspirational Story on Thankfulness

The Gift of Gratitude

In a small village lived a young boy named Arjun. He always complained about his life—his clothes were old, his house was small, and he thought others were much happier than him. No matter what he had, it never felt enough.

One day, Arjun met an old man sitting under a tree. The man smiled and asked, “Why do you look so unhappy, my child?”

Arjun replied, “I have nothing to be happy about. My life is full of problems.”

The old man gently handed him a small notebook and said, “For the next seven days, write down three things every day that you are thankful for. Then come back to me.”

Reluctantly, Arjun agreed.

On the first day, he struggled. But he wrote:

I have food to eat

I have a place to sleep

My mother cares for me

As days passed, Arjun started noticing more—his friends, the cool breeze in the evening, the laughter he shared, even the sunrise.

After seven days, he returned to the old man, but this time with a smile.

The old man asked, “What changed?”

Arjun said, “Nothing around me changed… but I did. I realized I already have so much.”

The old man nodded and said, “Gratitude turns what we have into enough.”

From that day, Arjun stopped complaining and started appreciating. His life became lighter, happier, and more meaningful—not because his situation improved, but because his perspective did.

Moral:

When you learn to be grateful, happiness finds its way into your life.
